I'm slowly coming along in this journey of mine.
From the 1900's to about the 1990's fashion trends had major changes every ten years. In this day and age whats 'in' and not 'in' changes every season.. thats 4 times a year and 40 times every ten years. It's hard to keep up, so I'm challenging myself to not keep up but instead to make do and mend.
To wear what I have and make what I need, or buy second hand.
A while ago I had a massive urge to clean out my wardrobe, this happens about once a year so I took the opportunity and threw myself in and while I was at it threw a lot of things out (to give to Vinnies).
Clothes I hadn't worn in years, or had never worn, clothes that didn't fit me or weren't flattering and clothes bought on impulse - all thrown in a big pile on my floor. Then there were the clothes that I liked, but which had rips and holes and were just generally a bit ratty - but fixable.
Today I started to mend a bunch of clothes, some I'll keep and some I'll give away. But man it feels good to make do and mend. To acknowledge that I have more enough, to think more about where my clothes come from and where they end up.
I want to encourage you to do the same, take stock of what you have, keep what you need and see what you can fix before throwing it away and buying a new one (if you want to)
